Independent, third-party lubricant product certification provides peace of mind to both food processors and consumers alike. For over 10 years NSF International an independent, non-governmental not for profit organisation has managed a global registration program for food grade lubricants.

Serving manufacturers operating in 80 countries, the NSF Mark is recognised for its value in international trade around the world and is respected by regulatory agencies at the local and international levels.

Lincol Oil Company supply food grade lubricants that are all NSF H1 REGISTERED and can be found on the NSF white book.. What does this mean……. NSF H1 registration, the lubricant manufacturer must demonstrate that all lubricant ingredients meet requirements established by the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Title 21 of the US code. This ensures the lubricant meets strict health and safety requirements for application where incidental contact with food might occur. Similarly, another product standard is ISO 21469 establishes strict hygiene requirements for the formulation.

The main question facing you as a food processor today is which products do I choose for what job.

Our team of technical staff are here to help and can provide the answers for you.

Lincol Oil Company is the only UK based company that can offer our customers a full range of cross branded products. Being an independent company we have the ability to choose the right products for our customers needs. Our reputation over the last 106 years has been built on product supply and service, and with this in mind we have sourced the best products on the market.

Not only are we able to offer food grade lubricants but we also stock a large range of Industrial, Marine and Wind Turbine lubricants.

Don’t be caught with a recall resulting from a compressed air contamination.

Where is the lubricant contamination Risk?

Air compressor Original Equipment Manufacturers indicates contamination from compressed air can be as high as 100 mg oil/m³. Even if a well maintained compressor has the correct filters and coalescers in place, it can still carry over 25 mg oil/ m³, while poorly maintained compressors with no oil filters, or incorrectly fitted oil filters or coalescers in place, will have unspecified oil carry over at a much higher rate. With the correct filtration equipment (3 stages),0.1 ppm can be achieved.

Air quality has a major impact on Food Safety. However even with multi-stage filtration, some of the oil can end up in the compressed air as a mist. This can contaminate food products being processed when the compressed air is used to stir or mix liquid food or to blow open bags for filling.

What does the U.S FDA say?

Title 21 Food and Drugs charter. Subpart 1 Sec. 110.40

Compressed air or other gases mechanically introduced into food or used to clean food contract surfaces or equipment shall be treated in such a way that food is not contaminated with unlawful indirect food additives

Code of federal regulations Title 21 volume 3 section 178.3570 lubricants with incidental food contact.

Maximum Allowable Contamination Levels with food;

Non Food Grade Lubricants….. 0 ppm

Food Grade Lubricants ………. 10 ppm

Shell Cassida Fluid CR46 is a fully synthetic high performance long life compressor oil, registered by NSF as H1 for incidental food contact. Resistance to oxidation which reduces gum & lacquer deposits on the coalescer, means better efficiency, air and lower maintenance costs.

A compressor was left running on a competitor fluid which showed deposits before the oil change at 4000 hrs. It was flushed and filled with Shell Cassida Fluid CR 46. After 5,756 hours on Shell Cassida CR 46 the coalescer and oil filter were inspected with the following results:

  •  Both were found clean and free from deposits
  • Seals were in excellent condition
  • Oil analysis showed oil still in excellent condition

Cassida CR 46 has been used in these compressors globally.

“Lean Manufacturing” is part of a business wide strategy aimed at minimising operating costs and increasing market potential.

Lean is now the name used for a collection of business performance improvement tools and concepts that focus on enhancing Quality, Cost, Delivery and People’s contributions through the application of world class manufacturing principles, the elimination of waste and continual improvements in workplace safety.

 The five Lean principles are

  • Specify what creates value from the customers perspective
  • Identify all the steps along the process chain
  • Make those processes flow
  • Make only what is pulled by the customer
  • Strive for perfection by continually removing waste.

The main driver for Lean is to compress the time period from customer order to banking payment. The way that is achieved is by identifying and eliminating waste. In the supply chain there are several ways waste can be huge.

  • Over production
  • Inventory
  • Transport
  • Processing
  • Idle Time
  • Operator motion
  • Bad quality

The good thing about Lean is that it is not just about buying the latest piece of kit or having the best facilities; it’s about developing a different approach to work. It’s not expensive to get started and it is adjustable for large or small businesses.

Lean is a journey of continuous improvement rather than a destination. Once you have taken the first steps you’ll almost certainly want to continue.

Here at Lincol Oil we have helped some of Europe’s major Food Manufactures through the Lean process. We have developed ways in making the application easier. You no doubt have vast knowledge about your own industry. We have been serving the food industry since 1906. Lincol have been developing a colour coding system which has been implemented by the Findus group as part of the Lean process.

If you can identify with any of the following Lincol Oil can help

  • Are oil changeovers a problem
  • Outputs unpredictable
  • Too much down time
  • Wasting valuable time on the same old issues
  • Not got all the data and specifications you need
  • Wrong Lubricants
  • Not enough information on food safe Lubricants
  • Need to reduce costs

Lincol Oil Company make monthly donations to the NSPCC. Having supported this charity’s local fundraising events for many years Lincol has now decided to show their commitment to the charity by making regular monthly donations. Lincol made this decision after hearing that any donations made will go towards the valuable work of their local NSPCC Family Project Centre; where local children who suffer from abuse are helped by a team of dedicated people. The centre is in jeopardy of closing due to recent economic times and a fall in the income needed to maintain the facility. Lincol sincerely hopes that this does not happen to such a needed facility.

Lincol Oil Company which has been in business for over 103 years is keeping up with modern times by focusing on the wind turbine industry.  Based in Lincolnshire Lincol is working with oil giant Shell to promote a range of lubricants specifically manufactured by Shell which will give long term maintenance of wind turbines.

Michael Harrington, Managing Director said, “Not only are we in a position to supply this specialist product, our dedicated team of staff can provide an expert technical back up service to compliment it.  We have spent a lot of time researching this relatively new industry and with our reliable distribution structure in place we feel we can offer a complete professional package to the engineers.  The east coast is already home to a number of wind turbines but there is scope for many more.  A further two farms are presently at the planning stage and if approved would alone generate enough power to supply 760,000 homes; the power expected to be fed back to the national grid by the end of 2012.”

According to a report published by the Sustainable Development Commission, to tackle the problems of climate change and energy security, wind power must be made to work and the UK has the most geographically diverse wind resource in Europe.  Climate change will have a devastating impact unless urgent action is taken to boost the contribution of renewables, alongside energy efficiency measures.

In the ever-ending drive for greater efficiency and competitive advantage, food manufacturers must continually balance the need to meet stringent quality and food safety standards with key financial factors that afect unit cost. Lubrication is a small but very significant part of this production equation.

Lincol oil understand that the food and beverage industries present unique challenges for lubricants, with environments where there is often intense heat, sever cold and significant amounts of water and food deposits. Working with Shell as Key distributor for the UK Shell Cassida range of food grade lubricants to hep food manufacturers balance the demands of increasing food safety legislation with the need to push equipment performance to the limit and increasing productivity whilst keeping costs to a minimum.

Using Shell Food Safe Cassida range you will enhance the performance of your processing equipment without compromising the safety of the food or your brand. WWW.lincol-oil.co.uk
